Nations that fail women
A fairly vomit inducing “leader” narrated by an equally pompous voice. There are so many fallacies within the article it’s hard to know where to begin. Firstly the obsessive focus on the Middle East, when women’s rights are hardly any better in Latin America. I guess it would be harder to make lazy assumptions in Latin America. The lost staggering was explaining Kashmir’s gender imbalance as a cause for its violence. The gender imbalance apparently caused by polygamy…no mention of the horrific now 30 year stand off with Indian Security Forces which has led to 100,000 deaths, many of whom where men. As well as the total collapse of the economy, which has led to a brain drain (again mostly young men). The article got worse, with the author referring to “male kinship groups” formed by “cousins” who have “clannish” behaviour. An orientalist trope if I’ve ever heard one. Where are these “kinship groups”? Women’s rights are a universal issue, each geography has its own unique set of issues. This orientalising myth of saving eastern women is nauseating and must stop. We in the East, know the Taliban is retrograde and many things need to be done to assuage women’s rights. We don’t need to be preached and patronised by a fool in St James.

Quick succinct summary of articles in the newspaper the editors would like to highlight. Excellent additional weekly episodes on democracy in US and a preview of international news expected for the forthcoming week.
