The Truth Shall Set You Free?
So far I am enjoying this series. I like the presentation. However, I hoped it would be made very clear that US policy during Iran-Iraq war was to equipt Iraq with the means to make chemical weapons, & to sanction their use so as to avoid an Iran win at all costs. The means to make those weapons were supplied by US, European & other western Govts. The interview with Rumsvelt mentions that fact briefly. But stating that we ‘knew’ from the attack on Kurdish Halabja & the murder of 5000 Kurds (1988) that Iraqi regime had WMD, is misleading. We knew they were used against Iran, on both civilians & combatants between 1983 - 1988, we knew upwards of 20,000 combatants & civilians, including Iranian Kurds had died as a result (& the ongoing deaths from after effects continue). We knew because we gave it to them. What we didn’t expect was that Saddam would use them on people the US didn’t sanction their use on. That would be more accurate & contextual. We were ok with their use as long as it was to Iranians. Just as the policy now in Mid East is against Iran, regardless of the fall out to the area & the rest of the world, so it was then. Saddam’s error was to turn his ambitions against his fellow Arabs & former US masters. Otherwise our concern about WMD was absent. The duplicity of western attitudes (including Blair) & behaviours towards other countries should always be hilighted & never understated, simply because it’s still happening now. We are once again making the case for war based on very very dubious ‘intelligence’ & rationale.

Thanks for your hard work on this - It is still stunning to see how classily arrogant and obsessed were the US & UK were- jingoistic and simplistic assumptions about what was good for another complex and nuanced Arabic society. With the issue of WMD there was the warped and twisted...Read full review »

Good piece of work spoilt by the abrupt interruption for an advert for a razor

Utterly compelling, entertaining and lucidly explained. Cannot wait until the next episode.. am hooked. Also I love David Dimbleby’s voice and style.. on a par with David Frost.
