Intelligent, but a bit sneery
Articulate and interesting, with generally very good content. (The Let England Shake special was superb and also the Kristin Hirsch interview last year- check both out.) Unfortunately most of the time there's always a sense that this tries a bit hard to be cool. There's too much talk full stop and within that far too much 'clever' talk for my liking. Take the Mercury Awards episode a few weeks back: 'Purely on sonic terms that (Run by Snow Patrol) and Chasing cars are actually quite good songs.' I tend to judge most music sonically; how else do you do it? But alas, some songs are too popular for our GMW heroes and are thereby rubbish. That particular angle doesn't really fit with music fans in 2011, especially in the Guardian, which is in itself a bit popular. The Guardian's Football Weekly, Books and Film podcasts all seem to tune in quite well to their listeners while this one has two dozen more popular pods ahead of it in the queue. It´s an eclectic mix of music, mostly based around new music from a London-media perspective. A lot of talk about the Grime scene or the influences of Dubstep (whatever they might be) and not enough actual music to listen to. A bit more sounds and less chat would help listeners to get a hold on...Read full review »
