A fantastic film history series that steps beyond the Hollywood milieu
Travis Mushett is a film scholar, a skilled editor and producer and superlative podcast host and thus the perfect tour guide for anyone seeking to explore the exotic and distant eras of world film. Travis' first season focuses on the films of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933), contextualising each movie in light of the story of its making, the personalities who made it, the surrounding history in which it was made and some fun bits of trivia (did you know Fritz Lang almost directed The Cabient of Dr. Caligari?!). Two key elements of Travis' work really stuck out for me: 1) the podcast has great production values with a great selection of background music and voice clippings that brilliantly illuminate Travis' narration; 2) Travis is able to deftly summarise large swaths of history and biography that remains erudite but never exhausting -- I became a fan as soon as I heard him succintly explain the origins and unfolding of the German Revolution in just a few sentences. All in all, a great podcast which should introduce you to a whole era of daring, magnificent and entertaining films and provide you with a good, general understanding of the Weimar Republic, from its unpromising birth to its tragic fall. Here's looking forward to season 2! Personally, I'm hoping for Soviet Montage, Italian Neo-Realism or Cinema Novo.Read full review »

Well researched and well narrated, this is a great European counterpart to Karina Longworth’s “You Must Remember This.” I prefer podcasts featuring researched narratives over casual discussion, and as I happen to be revisiting Weimar cinema, this is a dream come true. Hopefully it will continue...Read full review »
