Don’t Judge Me

Description
Conversations can become contentious in a hurry in the current climate; whether you are talking politics, values, or any number of topics. Everyone has the need to be seen and heard, but the skill of listening sometimes seems like a lost art.  It takes intentional effort to listen well, particularly when you don't agree with someone. The real problem is that when you become offended, you shift into judging the other person. And judgement builds a wall of separation and blocks effective communication. "Change Your Questions, Change Your Life" is a book by Marilee Adams that I think should be required reading for anyone wanting to improve relationships at work. Her description of the 2 modes - learner mode and judger mode - correlate perfectly with what I describe as the high road vs. the low road. An especially helpful skill is becoming aware of which road you are on. The next step is knowing what to do if you find yourself on the low road. I mention Dr. Adams' Choice Map in this episode.
