Conjecture and Rumour
It’s logical that such a fresh and recent case would eventually dry up with genuine content for a podcast such as this one, but nonetheless it’s extraordinarily disappointing how quickly this podcast descended in to amplifying conjecture, rumour and, in some cases, flat out falsehoods and/or conspiracy theories. Whether it’s creating boogeymen out of tourists (“Brazilian community come down for doofs”), giving extended airtime to housewife urban legends like that of “known areas” where drug dealers congregate (not many drug dealers are likely to congregate around any area which is “known” for so long as they want to avoid police attention) and perhaps worst of all - the complete misinformation around drug use and drug influence. The podcast goes out of its way to misrepresent the influence of drugs such as LSD and MDMA (can be dangerous in some situations, but rarely in the manner discussed here) and completely ignore the more prevalent and insidious presence of methamphetamines. It even brings in a boogeyman of “a couple puffs of a joint” which makes zero sense to anyone who has ever used marijuana recreationally or otherwise (which is nothing to say of alcohol being a far more logical and likely influence in any foul play which might’ve occurred, but that doesn’t get the big bucks). It also appeared to dabble in suggesting boogeymen of Byron’s homeless, doing little to dissuade this line of thinking. Ultimately, it’s not that farfetched to think maybe The Australian’s conservative agenda has also crept in to this podcast, which is very sad. As well-meaning as this podcast and its host might be, this kind of red-herring reliant podcast is exactly the kind of podcast which *doesn’t* help solve unsolved cases but can actually work against it. One only hopes that will not be the case here.

Only first episode in, but the storytelling is excellent so far. I really hope his podcast opens up Theo’s story to the world and that new leads can be generated in order to give his family some answers

Very impressed with the Australian for their work on these podcasts. It reminds me of good old fashioned detective work by journalists. I’m not somebody who listens to podcasts but the ones produced by the Australian have really sucked me in. Great job.
