The Victoria Day long weekend is traditionally viewed as the unofficial start of summer - and for many it is - but for the London Health Sciences Centre it can be the start of something completely different. The May 2-4 long weekend serves as the start of the summer trauma season. Around two thirds of serious trauma cases are seen in the emergency room from May to September. Last year, there were over 550 serious trauma cases at the LHSC, which is around a 20 per cent increase from 2022.

The Ontario government has told child-care centres that it will implement a new way of funding the national 10-dollar-a-day program starting next year. The change was relayed in a memo to child-care centres last week. While the focus is on the provincial government, what about the federal government? Have they set up a system that can work?

Alice Munro died this week at the age of 92, leaving behind an incredible legacy. Munro was born in Wingham and lived in Clinton for many years and often used southwestern Ontario as inspiration for her short stories. She was the first lifelong Canadian to win the Nobel and the first recipient cited exclusively for short fiction. What was it that made her so great?

A new report says the average asking rent for a home in Canada in April was up 9.3 per cent compared with a year ago. All provinces recorded month-over-month and year-over-year increases in asking rents, except for Ontario while London bucked the provincial trend and went up slightly.

A motion to approve $687,000 in funding for London’s Ark Aid Street Mission to extend its emergency winter shelter beds has been approved by city politicians. Council's strategic priorities and policy committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to pull the cash from a city reserve fund and give it to Ark Aid, which will allow the provider to keep beds open at three city locations until the end of July.

The latest report card from ParticipAction says climate change poses an extra challenge to children and youth who need more exercise outside and less time staring at screens. The non-profit gives Canada's kids a D-plus for overall physical activity after finding that 39 per cent of children between the ages of five and 17 got the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day.
