Backyard chicken raising is becoming very popular in urban communities. I will share my experiences when I decided to get started with a small flock of my own. There are a few things that I should have done differently before purchasing my hens. I hope my lessons learned will benefit others that are interested in keeping chickens in the city. Sylvia Meléndez-Klinger is a registered dietician of the American Dietetic Association and a licensed dietitian nutritionist. She was awarded Outstanding Dietitian of 2009 by the Illinois Dietetic Association - West Suburban Chapter.  The Chicago Dietetic Association honored her as "Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year" in 1994.
