Way Too Black and White
I tried 6 episodes of The Sporkful because it has a great concept and top-notch production, but I found it way too narrow to be useful or enjoyable. The hosts are capable and funny, but they are obsessive to a degree I would expect more from a comic book or Star Wars podcast. They don't disagree often enough, so 85% of the show is a lecture on the "correct" way to make grilled cheese instead of a discussion about different styles of grilled cheese or ways to make all types of grilled cheese better. That's fine if you have exactly the same taste in everything as the hosts, but otherwise you're left out. I didn't learn better ways to make grilled cheese - I learned the way to make grilled cheese if I ever have to host Mark and Dan for a quick lunch. The ice cubes episode was a good example of how the show could have been useful, but it's the exception. If you are similarly obsessive, and your tastes match closely with the hosts, this will be perfect. Otherwise it feels to me like fussy, yuppie Brooklynites telling me that I make sandwiches wrong.Read full review »
