Talk Show Review:
I'm unclear on what relationship (if any) the newest iteration of "The Talk Show" has with Dan Benjamin or the 5by5 network. Without knowing financial specifics or having knowledge of any off-air disputes that Dan and Gruber may have had, it doesn't make sense to comment. What *is* pertinent to this review is the quality of the new show and its quality in relation to the previous iteration. *DISCLAIMER* Since this is only episode one there is still room to evolve. However, I don't expect much to change because Gruber, at this point in his podcasting career, has a fixed style (even if the show may not). In this respect, I think that most of my concerns will prove to be systemic. This iteration of the show seems unnecessarily disjointed and significantly less compelling than its predecessor. Both Gruber and the show seem to be less restrained and more tangential which magnifies both the highs and the lows. In this respect, I think the show will be significantly more polarizing than the previous version. Overall, there seems to be a noticeable lack of structure, energy, and perspective. Listening to the ad segments is even *more* unbearable than usual. The audio quality has noticeably decreased, and there isn't the same level of engagement with the audience that many listeners may be accustomed to. I'll give it another episode or two but will likely unsubscribe.Read full review »

More reviews of The Talk Show With John Gruber
I suppose all good things must come to an end, but it doesn't make the end any less painful. Despite what Gruber would claim, Dan was half of The Talk Show. The end effort is much worse than 50% missing. Shame on you John Gruber.Read full review »

I'll give it one more episode and then I'm done. First podcast was really terrible. Horrible audio, really boring and unfocused. Seems like the way gruber ended the 5by5 talk show was pretty lame too. Makes me not want to follow him on his site either.Read full review »

Controversy! How dare Groobs abandon Dan's network! Turncoat! Traitor! Etc. But, actually, this first episode is really good. Gruber wakes up when he has guests. Remember the Merlin episode? Or Adam Lisagor's? And Monteiro getting Gruber and Amy Jane to guest on Let's Make...Read full review »
