Not "The Talk Show"
If Gruber wanted to walk from 5by5, so be it. It's his life and his time. But, like many others, I think it's basically false advertising for him to call this "The Talk Show." It's not; he was half the show, and it was half Dan's show. If Gruber -- who can be extremely thoughtful when he cares to be -- doesn't realize that, then he's a bit blinded by vanity and/or ego. In any case. In some ways it's unfair to judge the show just based on one episode, but that's sort of the situation he's going to be in if he doesn't settle on a permanent co-host. He doesn't really have the knack to be "the host" of a show, and I think that's sort of what made this show a bit listless and dry. Apparently he's been friends with his -- utterly bland -- cohost, but you wouldn't really know it from the lack of on-air chemistry. Imagine this every week, with new people. Ugh. Maybe some weeks might be better, but I doubt it's going to come anywhere close to the highs and entertainment value of his show with Dan. It's going to likely be some flashes of insight and/or inside info, but with a lot of dry patches and a lot of inside jokes. I for one don't think I'm going to have the patience for that.Read full review »

It's true that this is a different podcast in some ways than the show on 5by5, but different isn't necessarily bad. It seems to be more informal--more like a water cooler discussion than a news show--and it seems that's exactly what John Gruber wants. It's also true that there...Read full review »
