UB40
Remember the band called UB40? Of course you do! An ethnically diverse reggae group that sprung out of Handsworth in the late 70s.... they evolved from a gritty, socially conscious group into purveyors of twee pop-reggae cover version balladeers. They had UK number ones! They played to Prime Ministers and Popes... They had it all! But then it all fell apart. The lead singer left, to be joined by the guy who does the reggae rapping stuff (y'know... 'there's a rat in mi kitchen what am I gonna do' etc) and another guy as well. Never mind! UB40 carried on with a new singer. He isn't as good as the original singer, but the songs are still the same, so nobody minds too much. So what happened to the original singer and his two pals? I hear you ask! Well. They also tour as UB40! And they play the same songs too! Brilliant! So now you can enjoy two different UB40s playing the same stuff every week. It must be great to be a UB40 fan mustn't it? Not really... you see: neither version of the band is quite as good as the original one. If they had left and released something new and ground-breaking in the reggae ouvre then I would understand. But they haven't. Will they re-define the genre in time? Maybe... hopefully? Until then 3 stars.Read full review »

Whilst I love the Ramble the Guardian Football Weekly was always the best. That wasn't because it was the Guardian but because of Jimbo and the team and here they are on their own. The brilliant insight, the amusing irreverence and the one liners from Jimbo easily make this the new number one...Read full review »
