Army Values, contra Duty, Honor, Country Comments - Poor Taste
Good afternoon - I've been a couple-year listener to VDH, both from the early days of the Trump administration and speeches on YouTube from Hillsdale all the way through the regularly tuning into the Apple Podcast almost daily. I also serve as an Army National Guard chaplain and have 2 combat deployments under my belt. I'm a recent Army War College graduate through their Fellowship Program at Tufts University/The Fletcher School for Law and Diplomacy. Additionally, I've found the Hoover Institute a reliable source of geo-political assessment and consider myself an ardent social conservative. This is the first time I've had a sour taste in my cognitive palette from VDH, and it was for the commentary on the USMA's/West Point's change in mission statement. Jack Fowler, in his recitation of the new mission statement admitted regarding the Army Values: "I don't know what they are...maybe it's like getting a pot of gold at the end..."--he further went on to say, "Victor, no more duty, honor, country." Before the ensuing distracted diatribe against this move, I'd recommend doing more than read the inadequate CollegeFix website story (or the cross-referenced Western Journal article). Neither website went on to describe or reference what the actual Army Values are...and they are: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, Personal Courage (spells out the acrostic: LDRSHIP). To be sure, "Country" is no longer in the mission statement, however, I think "Selfless Service" and "Integrity" are WELL endowed values to substitute for "Country"--notwithstanding, the Army's definition of "Loyalty" is sourced in loyalty to our oath of enlistment/commission with reference to our US Constitution. Certainly, this makes up for the lack of "Country" in the mission statement. The bottom line, as the chaplain corps, among others within profession of arms, seeks to impact the moral character of our formations, this change is actually helpful to synchronize the (spiritual?) formation of cadets (leaders-in-training) with the balance of the Army that aspires to live the Army Values (LDRSHIP). I'd like to remain a faithful listener, however, I'd encourage a little deeper digging (or at least check with someone within the Army who would/could speak to the ethos/spiritual emphases...perhaps a chaplain or two) before commenting. I’m a picky guy and almost always end up falling out of love with podcasts I initially am enthused about. Even little things bother me, like what sounds like too much ego in an otherwise decent podcaster. The exception remains Victor and Jack. Jack is the most sweetly humble man I’ve ever...Read full review »
