A liberal dose of science, but the boy-toy needs to go.
I listened to the July 17 broadcast. Kirsten provides the brainpower, while Justin provides the color commentary. I think I first knew I was in trouble when in a story about automated drones developed for the military, Justin flatly states, "I am total against weapon systems of all kinds". Really...? In the real world where the rest of us live there is good and evil, honor and tyranny. The weapon itself has no moral value, but instead we should judge how the weapon is used. As hyperbolic illustration I could say Justin is against the use of shotguns to protect an African orphanage against marauding hyenas.... Justin must hate those orphans.... :-) Moving on to the Washington report from the US capitol. The hosts and their guest all seemed to rue new government rules that call for a cost benefit analysis of new research initiatives. I guess if all weapon systems are bad, then it is not much of a leap to all research initiatives should be funded. I can however understand that *who* does the analysis could input political or ideological influence that we do not want in those decisions, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt there. But moving on they were equally unhappy with a new rule that requires determination of whether the project being proposed is already being served by private industry. I guess the believe that a search engine funded and implemented by the U.S. government would have served us better than Google. Finally, they complained that all of these new rules are another example of government meddling with Scientific inquiry. There was no apparent awareness of the irony that their complaint of government interference was based on the fact that the government was choosing to NOT get involved in certain projects. Or in other words, "What right have you Mr, Government to take away *our* funding?" In the end, although I concentrated on the political inanity, I just was not sufficiently entertained or informed by this show, so I think I'll pass in the future. Two stars for good production quality and factual content in the actual reporting.Read full review »

More reviews of This Week in Science – The Kickass Science Podcast
I found the news portion entertaining at first, the interviews were ok. But after the third program, I got a little tired of the slight inserting of liberal leaning personal views in my science shows. If it isn't a law, don't present it as one. They seemed to try to insert non scientific...Read full review »
