good science chat spoiled by doofus co-host
I gave this show a fair try, having listened weekly for about 3 months. In the end I dropped it for 2 related reasons: (1) the co-host Justin is just too annoying to tolerate, and (2) the show is too light on science. If you can get through the excessively long morning zoo-style opening, Dr. Kirsten Stanford does cover interesting science stories with a good balance of facts and explanation. Unfortunately, though, every single story is interrupted by the unfunny commentary of doofus sidekick, Justin. I do have a sense of humor, and I do enjoy a bit of banter among hosts, but Justin's personality is just too annoying to put up with. Instead of acting as a co-host of a science program, he behaves as if he's the sole host of an unfunny comedy program. To me, his presence on the show is like that of the only drunken fratboy at a party full of fun, yet sober, people--not funny; just annoying. The tipping point for me was TWIS dated September 16, 2008. It took almost 9 minutes to get to the first story. I'm not kidding! They wasted nearly 15% of the hour-long show on mindless chatter, most of it being Justin ego-babble. It especially annoys me because at the end of every show Dr. Kirsten always complains about running out of time to cover more stories. If you want real science, do not subscribe. If you appreciate funny humor, also do not subscribe.Read full review »

More reviews of This Week in Science – The Kickass Science Podcast
The hosts work it like morning DJs, only they're talking about science instead of some idiot celeb. If you like morning DJs and science, this one might work for you. Me, I couldn't listen to ten minutes.Read full review »

It's a fine live radio show. It's not a good podcast. If they went back to the radio show & compressed all the blah blah yap yap into a 20- to 30-minute concise 'cast, then it would be five stars. Instead, I'll be unsubscribing today.Read full review »

This is the sort of podcast that will get youngsters (and oldies!) excited about science. The best hour of my week by far.
