Forgotten criminal history...
I'm a listener in deep east Texas, and our local NPR station has a history professor who has a show called History Matters (his name is Gary Joiner on Red River Radio). I find Mr. Jones' show much in the same vein: historical, informative, and captivating. Modern Americans don't realize how interesting the newspaper used to be, and Mr. Jones brings this long-forgotten genre to life via his podcast. I love the sources that he references, and many times his own words flow seamlessly between articles and commentary, so much so that I can't tell the difference between his own words and those of his sources. I've listened to some podcasts with my teenagers, and one in particular is always asking for "True Crime Historian." Though I'm not a huge fan of listening to tragedies that befell children (the dynamite story from Michigan was hard to hear), there are so many episodes that I'm able to pass them over without fear of it being 2 months before another podcast is out. This is only a personal preference, and considering I have 4 kids things like that hit close to home. Mr. Jones--if you read this, in 1901 the last public hanging took place in Nacogdoches County. A black man was hung for the savage murder of a family in the Blackjack/Chireno area. I think it might interest you to read about it. Aside from all of my comments, I much enjoy the show and have recommended it to several friends.Read full review »
