Based on the preview, I don't think I'll be checking this one out soon
Is it too soon to judge a podcast before its first episode? I listened to the very first upload, curious on what their description meant by have a twist on radio drama. What I heard had repelled rather than enticed me to listen to that first episode (which was, I'm presuming, the whole point of it being there). Instead of something that made me feel like I was really there at any point, I couldn't lose myself at all. I busted out laughing from the Axeman line reading—it was half the way this voice that tried so hard to be edgy/intimidating & half how he trailed off. In fact, none of the acting I heard was great. The accents were unconvincing even to my untrained ear, deliveries felt read off a paper (" you're tellin' me" line). The female host did NOT sell me. The "yes that was the Axeman" made me wonder if they were trying to say "oooh look how creepy that voice was!" Or a kinda embarrassed "yes, that was the Axeman. He does that sometimes, interrupting our podcast. Don't mind him". Neither sounded so much interested as selling a series by cold-reading the pitch. And the thing about the Axeman's line reading being completely true to fact, as if that's something special..? This is true crime, isn't it? It's appealing to true crime fans, right? Then it's neither impressive nor altogether spooky to hear the letter read verbatim. I wasnt made to be scared of him before, and definitely not now. Hell, if I didn't already know about those murders, I'd wonder what they were going on about. They could've enticed audiences by given some... I don't know... Background into the very interesting cases coming up? There was some sort of sound montage there reminiscent of a cheesy crime reenactment show on investigation discovery. But here's the thing: those shows have visuals to let the audience know what's up. On audio-only formats, you need to make sure that you convey the same information and retain relevant context. I didn't know if I was supposed to be in New Orleans or in a house or what. On that note... The sound quality was good, but in some instances it you don't want every single sound right next to your ear. The noise of footsteps and all conversations came off as if the editor didn't think to make the crisp effect of shoes further away or add any spacial feel to dialogue. It just sounded like broken up audio cuts. Like the actors spoke into the mic and sent the audio in. And then someone grabbed some free music and effects to slip in, on the same volume as everything else. The structure was the nail in the coffin though. Instead of reminding everyone that listening to their podcast is ultimately useless because the cases remain unsolved. By that point saying "but we are gonna try to speculate on who we think did it!" Doesn't fix that feeling. Instead, they could've stuck with the speculating side. Though I had a huge problem with that concept: This podcast seems like it is trying to do a radio docudrama, based on actual cases and facts. Then they go ahead and show their conclusions ("guilty!"). But if the docudrama bits are real, this means they are portraying their admitted guesswork as equal as trustable fact. To me that comes off as more of a serious claim. to be fair, others could see it as them perpetrating a (rare) trope of true crime dramatization shows—dramatize the theories. When it comes to true crime media that I care the legitimacy of, that just rubs me the wrong way. And even if it didn't, that teaser included no reason to trust the speculation the podcast would offer. The teaser episode didn't do its job, and I wish I could rate only that. And if it's a concern: no, I don't have to listen to the first episode, because I shouldn't have to be convinced to by anything other than interest. I hope they perhaps make a new trailer or learn from my concerns stated here, I wish them only the best.Read full review »

meh
voice actors sucked and the hosts were average at best... the higher pitched one was particularly annoying . The concept however was interesting and they chose good cases.. just wish it was done by someone else and a little less childish.

The voice actors are extremely cringe worthy. Listening to this podcast wasn't exactly pleasant.Read full review »

I should start by saying that I began with episode 2 and only got halfway through this episode before I stopped listening, therefore I can't really comment on the series as a whole. I am a huge fan of true crime podcasts and I listen to a great many of them. Whilst this is scripted and...Read full review »
