“Interesting, thought provoking and well presented podcast about cholesterol. I do wonder however if the overall message we were left with was that all cholesterol levels are fine, and there’s no good reason behind why we want to measure or address them. The message was that there’s no evidence for modulating cholesterol with statins, and indeed the use of this medication may be a causal factor in alzheimers (or other dementias) which is I agree certainly an interesting point and needs research. It may create confusion for listeners however around why statins are prescribed, by not balancing the information given with what chances of diseases are reduced by lowering overall cholesterol (evidence based.) The alzheimers question is complex, as cholesterol in the brain is produced differently and is transported differently from elsewhere in the body, and there are multiple other impairments that may interplay with cholesterol levels (increased or decreased) in the brain that may lead to impaired brain function.
I’m not a doctor, just interested in research and balancing all viewpoints.
Really enjoying your series, thank you.”
