An honest review
I’ve done my due diligence with this podcast and have listened to every available episode. What follows is about as honest a review as can be written, so I will try to avoid hyperbole and just give you the straight dope. The first handful of episodes are a little shaky. I expect the producers were still trying to land on a format that worked. For instance, there are some fake commercials in here. These were used to good effect in Garrison Keillor’s show, but less so here. I can forgive a lot when dealing with a genre of storytelling that I enjoy, and you will too... but give it time. The payoff is sooo incredibly worth it. When you get to Season 2 you start to notice references to episodes, characters, and events in Season 1. These are subtle at first. A name sounds familiar... the description of an event... before you know it you are waist deep in the mythos of the Ghastly Ones. Nathaniel Hensley’s writing is tight and his storytelling is really starting to take off. The production values are legit. A memorable intro and featured music between acts. Season 3 and we have entered bona fide world building territory. The connections between stories, people, and events are deliberate and gorgeously intertwined. Hensley has a critical eye (and ear) in his own production. It is clear he is actively trying to make this better each time rather than stubbornly holding on to bits that don't work. There is no hesitation or trepidation in his delivery... and make no mistake, these stories are scary. There is reference to gore and vile unspeakable acts, but for the most part you are left to fill in the blanks and that is really a genius move. In short, if you like scary stories, put this in your regular rotation. The episodes are between 30 mins and an hour long—the perfect length for your commute. Just don’t think too hard about whether these stories are fiction or notRead full review »
