Absolutely brilliant, discursive approach to history. This softly-spoken man can teach you more about the subject matter than most. Wonderfully engaging.

As someone you had spent several decades studying twentieth century political, military, and diplomatic history, I always find something of interest in Nick’s programs. He covers both well known and obscure topics. And he has great book recommendations. I’ve been listening for years. Keep up the...Read full review »

I have to turn my volume all the way up to hear you, but then my ears are blasted when the commercial comes on.

There’s a weird clicking sound every so often! I’ll forget about it occasionally, then start focusing on it, then forget again... rinse, repeat. Great info- but what’s the click?!

I’ve been devouring this podcast for several months now and recommending it to any one who’s even slightly interested in history. I love that Nick manages to distill very complex topics into a short ~25 minutes class. I also loves how he draws comparisons between unrelated historical phenomena to...Read full review »

No frills, good overviews and in-depth pieces, progressive perspective on well-known events but also on less widely discussed topics. Highly recommended.

Love the podcast. Great perspective and research. Only thing keeping from 5 stars is the uneven audio quality and volumes, as well as ad interruptions mid-sentence.

Real depth and learning in each pod. Listen and learn.

I stumbled across this while I was looking for something on WW1. I love the variety of topics covered and at a level which is quite understandable for even the unserious history buff, who did their last exam on this subject 50 years ago!

Just run down the list of episodes - if you don't see a couple dozen topics you're interested in I'll eat my hat - er, toque! Thanks from Canada. How about an episode on DeGaulle's visit to Quebec July 24, 1967? Was he senile? Or just a busybody. It was also funny because the...Read full review »

I’ve only just stumbled over this podcast, so currently going through the back catalogue. It’s great though, overview of each subject with a few juicy details thrown in. Not too long, not too intense, not only for students.

I am a history junkie and this is one of my favourite history podcasts. I particularly enjoy the multipart podcasts that examine a subject in depth. I do not always agree with his opinions, however, they are always well informed. Well worth your time. He does not say “um” that much. :). I feel...Read full review »

My favorite thing about this pod is that when I see a new episode, even if it's a topic I might not be interested in, I enjoy the insight the host brings. It doesn't matter if it's Nazi propaganda prior to WWII or the US Labor movement after the war, or Nixon and China. The shotgun...Read full review »

I've been looking for a good history podcast as I seldom have time to sit down and read. This surpasses what I hoped for: clear, interesting content, accessible, well referenced, and regular. Thank you so much for putting it together and keep up the great work!

I began to listen to Explaining History a few weeks ago, having decided to give something other than books a try. I listen to hundreds of podcasts, and this is one that is increasingly on my "must hear" list. Nick Shepley has a great sense of narrative drive. He also does an admirable job of choosing topics of the appropriate scope for each podcast, so that he can showcase details and contingencies without drowning in them.

I tried to like this. I really did because I think it's good subject matter. But I could not even finish the first episode. Nick puts two "Um"s in every sentence and it's very irritating. He should learn how to speak before he attempts a podcast.Read full review »
