I did medieval history at University so some of the names are familiar. I had forgotten most of the rest so fantastic to have this accessible way into Germany history and the characters that drove it forward in the early years.

Have you always had trouble keeping Frederick Barbarossa and Frederick the Second straight? This podcast is full of information but also fast paced and entertaining.

Dirk just thanked his loyal listeners for sticking around. I’m still thrilled that this informative, structured and accessible podcast is their every week. It’s great to have the facts, motives, context and well placed interpretation laced with just enough dry and self-deprecating humor to...Read full review »

Ever wondered how the German empire of Otto the Great turned in to the collection of states know as the Holy Roman Empire that per Voltaire was neither Holy, Roman, nor an Empire? Have been following this podcast since Henry the Fowler began the process and now we are at where the Hapsburg step...Read full review »

I’ve listened to some others, one very well known, and always felt like I was just getting entertainment that was barely true. Not here. It’s refreshing to find an actual History podcast that is both informative on a subject I wanted to learn more about, and I just love the dry humor that is...Read full review »

By far the best English language German history resource on the web. Been looking for something like this for a decade, simply brilliant.

Dirk does a great job making this series both interesting and informative. Some history podcasts get lost in the weeds or suffer from being over generalized, but this podcast does not make those mistakes. This podcast is a perfect way to become acquainted with German history (especially for those...Read full review »

This is a great show for digging into German history. It covers a lot, and it’s more than just names and dates. I like the slow build of a historical story (recent series on the Hanse and the Teutonic Knights, for example), and the humor interspersed in the narrative makes it a thoroughly...Read full review »

Listening to this podcast is proof of my history nerdiness. Dirk does a great job of explaining the contexts of the events and the leading characters of the stories. He also adds subtle humor to situations that are often difficult to understand from my 21st century perspective. Lots of...Read full review »

One of if not the best history podcast I’ve ever followed. Amazing story telling, excellent structure that is easy to follow and great underlying research. It’s amazing that we can have access to niche content like this, what a time to be alive. Cheers Dirk!

Dirk does a great job of detailing each period so you can easily follow along. If you want to learn about Germany’s History beyond the World Wars, this is the best podcast to listen to.

I have a lot of catching up to do as I’m only on episode 12 if you count the three prologue episodes, but this is so well done it’s worth the time and energy that he spends doing it. I usually allow myself one episode a day… Yes, this is very very deep stuff and he and I are on the treadmill...Read full review »

"History of the Germans Podcast" is catnip for those interested in European history. The podcast is exhaustively researched, and the presenter is excellent. He has something of a German accent in English, but his diction is clearer than just about any podcast host I've heard. ...Read full review »

I owe you money. This is my favorite history podcast and probably the only one where i dont even want to skip over the patrion spiel. You manage to make even that funny. Kudos. As soon as i have more spending money you are first on the list of way too many podcasts i want to support.

As an immigrant in Germany with a not-so-great language skills I am very grateful for the opportunity to learn about german history in english! And the narration is just captivating. Thanks a lot!

Very well paced and in depth examination of German history. I particularly appreciate that the sources are mostly in German (I assume, based on what I hear). That corroborates for me the impression I get that we are really hearing direct perspectives from those most likely to know the source...Read full review »

This is a very informative and fun show about German history with an honest attitude towards the source material. I found it in a similar line as the podcast of the ‘Scandinavian history’, if you listen to both podcasts, you will get interlinked history of a sort of pan-Germanic history in the...Read full review »

Having listened to the first 2 episodes, this podcast shows a great deal of German and Central European history, unknown by most Europeans. Loved it so far!

A well-researched podcast that presents German history at a nice level of detail. However, there are a few issues. Notably, it can sometimes come off a bit dry (there is seldom any sense of drama or grandeur), and there are moderate but not severe biases of the typical contemporary liberal variety.

I love this podcast. Enough detail, no distractions, Dirk has a great dry wit!

Absolutely interesting both in terms of the detail provided and the broad perspectives it manages to convey. Extremely well narrated. We are only at the year 1100 at episode 100 and I very much hope the pace remains slow so that there are many more episodes to come.
Christoph Hanck via Apple Podcasts · Germany · 06/11/23
Very informative on a wildly underdone but important part of European and world history. The subject is of course complex but the podcaster is not only excellent on the details but also the emphasis and bigger picture. Thank you so much.

I’ve been skulking around the history podcast scene for many years now listening to history narratives about Rome, Byzantium (I know), England, the American Civil War, etc., etc., but this is by far one of my favorites. After reading some World War II history, I realized I knew very little about German history. The title of the podcast was exactly what I was looking for, and I was pleased when the content accurately reflected it. The host is witty, knowledgeable, and his German accent just … fits.

Where to start. This must be the most boring history podcast I have ever listened to. Completely scripted and read from a sheet including the very bad jokes. After listening to the first six episodes I can’t stand it any longer. Medieval history is my favourite thing but this one is a joy killer.
