I’m an Australian interested in history with a projected trip to both the Netherlands and Belgium and this series covers that whole region . Perfect! The bonus episodes nicely help break up the overall chronological account and provide cultural insights for the modern countries. Keep up the...Read full review »

I love the narrator and his work shows. His excitement about history is the only one which matches my own. As a firm Habsburg imperialist I am dreading the eight decades to come. But I’ve never understood better the challenges that were faced by the global Iberian empires in that little marsh...Read full review »

Last month I visited Amsterdam for a conference. A good occasion to visit its marvelous museums. The paintings tell a story but, you want know more. I found the History of the Netherlands podcast is a fantastic tool to get such information in a competant but also funny way.

Love this. Listening in preparation for an upcoming trip to the Netherlands. As an Aussie, I can relate to their slang and humour too. What are the chances of finding a comprehensive history of a place you are going too, told by people from your hom country? 5 stars

I’m learning Dutch and am so impressed by what they’ve accomplished. Looking in iTunes I came across this unbelievable podcast and can’t believe it’s exactly what I came looking for. Nice job by Jim Jeffries and what an unusual but pleasant choice!

This podcast is really great if you want to learn more about the Dutch (and Belgium, French and a bit German) history! As a history fan coming from the Netherlands, I thought that I knew most of its history (at least roughly). But Joe and Julian are telling so much more stories and details, so I...Read full review »

I keep waiting to learn why every wedding, funeral, church picnic, and every other party in my Dutch hometown in the USA had ham sandwiched in a raisin bun. We are not there yet….

I am amazed at this podcast and it’s presentation. They present a big picture of the Netherlands, that many history podcasts lack because they focus on the politics or war. My favorite podcast right now.

I highly recommend this *excellent* chronological history of the Low Countries by two Aussie immigrants who clearly love their adopted country without letting the fact blind them to its faults. Packed with both dry and silly humour, the level of research in both primary and secondary sources is...Read full review »

I just discovered this podcast and have listened to about 10 episodes so far. This is a great podcast! I have recently been exploring my genealogy in Friesland and I’m finding the history fascinating!

I listen to many chronological and interview history podcasts. The History of the Netherlands is without doubt my favorite. It’s even better than the History of Rome.
rboyce0143 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 07/16/21
These deeply researched stories told with just enough humor and a sprinkle of gratuitous alliteration. The interspersing of “mainline” episodes building on chronological history and deep dives into specific subjects makes this a great binge listen.

First off, the Aussie accent makes this 2x more enjoyable than it would be without it 😂 I love serious history podcasts and this fits the bill, right in line with ones like History of Rome, History of Byzantium, and The British History Podcast. Great, serious, thorough content, but put together...Read full review »

In school we learned a lot about the dutch history with an focus on the golden age, and what comes after. Loved the connection to belgium and france. Still missing a lot of northern history about Utrecht becoming a city. Frisian warlords like Grote Pier And the riches of the hanze cities, and...Read full review »

The podcasts are clearly well researched and well performed but also have some pretty clearly Australian humor and sarcasm. Really enjoy it. Also look up the picture of the presenter, surprised me.

This podcast has given me a much more nuanced understanding of European history through the lens of our favorite small corner. Well documented, narrated, and dense guidance through the history of the Dutch swamp. With masterful alliterations and a lovely sense of language (Aussie English - with the occasional try at Dutch) brought to you by a voice from the Tom Waits imitation club.

The narrator makes each episode fun, the humor is Dutch as are the way words are used making its fresh and fun. The humor is subtle, the descriptions are enjoyable and truly paint a picture in the mind. Each episode is fun and impactful. One of my favorite podcasts.

Is our presenter toning the excitable-ness down? I hope not.
