Fair and Honest
As an Eastern Orthodox, I really appreciate this podcast. Some here have accused Stephen of basically selling out. The reality is that, by not pandering to the anachronistic EWTN narrative, he makes it known that you can be a devout Catholic yet still appreciate that History is not as black and white as American Catholics would like us to think. You can respect the Pope and the place that he has in your Church while still acknowleding that all of this was, at best, not understood by most in the early Church. Unfortunately, it seems some of Stephen's brethern interpret appreciation of nuance and understanding of Ecclesial history as pandering to the Eastern Orthodox. On the contrary, I think Stephen has absolutely no agenda and simply loves history. Because of that, he is not threatened by what non-Catholic historians have to offer in regards to his Church as long as it matches up as good history. It is for that reason (and NOT because I somehow imagine that Stephen is an undercover Orthodox agent) that I so appreciate this podcast and the work that Mr. Guerra puts into it. I gave it 4/5 stars because I do agree that the style could be a bit more compelling and the host is a bit monotone. However, 1) we can't all be Dan Carlin, 2) who else is stepping up and doing a podcast about this in such an honest way and, 3) I really appreciate his dry humor that he throws in from time to time and the fact that it is said in his characteristic monotone voice, and so sincerely, is what makes those occassional breaks truly funny. Keep up the great work, Stephen! Josh in MIRead full review »

This is much more than a history of the Popes. It's also a history of the church and of the development of Christian theology. To give you some idea of the detail here, he spent 10 episodes just on the council of Nicaea. Steve also throws in sidetrack episodes whenever some topic takes his...Read full review »

If you have any interest in ecclesiastic history you must listen to this podcast. I'm very hesitant to give anything 5 stars but after great consideration I think the quality of research and the balance of perspective Steve gives to each podcast is just outstanding. I think he usually reads notes he wrote. He is one person telling us his history of the papacy from his perspective. He seems to be discussing from an Eastern or Greek Orthodox perspective. He doesn't include any listener feedback and has no interviews with other credible sources. He has...Read full review »
