i grew up with these books in my house. james dobson made my life so much harder than it needed to be, and it feels so good to hear him raked over the coals for it.

As someone raised Catholic, with family members who currently partake in Focus on the Family, it was incredibly helpful to gain context on the roots of that organization. It is depressing and so upsetting, but clarifying. I love Jake and Brooke’s presentation style, vibe, and their humor. I am...Read full review »

Every episode is a gift. I end up laughing, yelling etc at the podcast (in agreement). I’ve learned why certain things were done in my growing up years and love knowing my kid won’t go thru the same!

I've been listening to Jake & Brooke with my morning coffee, just like my mom listened to James Dobson in the 80s. This podcast is brilliant with Jake's sound intellectual and academic approach that becomes even more robust with the casual analysis in his conversations with Brooke....Read full review »

All of us personally harmed by Dobson and FOtF should get in on it. Joking…I think? This podcast has been so affirming. Hearing Jake and Brooke discuss it all confirms it really was that bad growing up in the Evangelical world Dobson built - it’s not just me. It’s also enraging to hear it all...Read full review »

This last episode particularly was like free, fulfilling, life-and-joy affirming therapy. I’m so grateful to you both.

My parents used James Dobson’s teachings to justify a lot of abusive behavior in my childhood, and this podcast has been so validating, healing, and a little triggering to listen to. I’ve been looking back on my childhood wondering if certain things were normal, and this podcast has been...Read full review »

I think this could have been so much better done if the podcaster had a little more therapy first. It was so, so cringy and painful to listen to. I’m not sure what his cohosts job was other than to giggle at him and to turn dobson’s books into s**ual meanings. Dobson has done a lot of damage so I...Read full review »

Listening to this, I’m becoming more aware of how much of a hold this man had on my childhood, without us having listened to his show. White evangelical culture has James Dobson’s fingerprints all over it, and this podcast shows those fingerprints. His connections to eugenics were initially...Read full review »

This podcast will resonate with anyone who grew up in an Evangelical household influenced by the quackery of James Dobson. The damage of Dobson’s teaching is incalculable, and continues. Audio quality is an issue. Jake is difficult to hear on episodes when Brooke is loud and clear. It may be an...Read full review »

As a new mom in the early 90s JD’s Strong willed child was often recommended by pediatricians and educators. The fear of having a difficult child was rapid. I grew up in the 70s and 80s with great parents but parents who were not overly involved in anything. No structured activities. No...Read full review »

I started listening to this podcast in part because I’m mentoring an evangelical teen, and I am seeking to understand more about his experiences, and in part because I wanted to educate myself more about evangelical Christianity and its impact on US politics. This podcast does an excellent job at...Read full review »

I grew up in the subculture. Listening to this podcast is so validating of my experience. I like that it’s a conversation between a former evangelical and someone who grew up without religion. Hearing Brooke’s reactions I am realizing that Evangelicalism, and Dobson in particular, are even more...Read full review »

This is great! “Tragically underhated” is the best description of James Dobson, and all the harm he has done through his long life. Jake and Brooke make a wonderful pair. Jake is the expert who was raised in evangelical Christianity. Brooke is the foil to tell the audience: no, what we went...Read full review »

As an exvangelical whose parents had all of the Dobson books, I had a vague idea that Dobson was just a typical backwards evangelical… but this podcast highlights how awful he and his teachings really are. Love it so far! The hosts are thoughtful and funny. The production quality is a bit low,...Read full review »

As someone who grew up on adventures in odyssey and hearing the ever sounding praises of James Dobson and focus on the family, this podcast is a breath of fresh air.

Little crazy in a good way. I was born to a fundamental Baptist missionary Pastor. I have about 10-15 memories total from my childhood thanks to my father. These people are making it possible for me to peel back some layers of the brainwashing in a surprisingly comedic way. If you’re looking to...Read full review »

I LOVE the hate that J Dobs is receiving. It is about time! The hosts are so funny which is an absolute must for me when reliving the rabid beliefs...Read full review »

The hosts has wonderful chemistry and the subject, while difficult at times, is handled so well. One of my new favorites: highly recommend to anyone curious or deconstructing.

I had high hopes for this show. Although they make valid points about bad psychology of Focus on the Family, I was taken aback by the juvenile approach this show uses. If you want people outright making fun of others and laughing hysterically this fits the bill.

Jake, Thanks for your work here. Important issues and as a parent that used some of Dobson’s material, I feel chastened (in a positive way) and I appreciate your work in pointing out so many of the shortcomings. However, I did find Brooke’s participation confusing and troubling. She laughs...Read full review »

Elder millennial checking in… raised on Focus on the Family. Loved my Brio magazine. Heeeey, I haven’t even listened yet, I just wanted to come rate, review and subscribe so you know how many of us out here really are desperate for a dialogue specifically about James Dobson. Can’t wait to listen.

As someone who was raised evangelical, this hits home for me! It is high time someone shined a light on these teachings. Thanks for letting me know I’m not crazy, and yes, things were that bad. Love it, thanks for the podcast!

As a human who knows nothing about evangelical teachings and context, this podcast is refreshing, approachable, and completely hilarious. The two hosts have contagious banter, with humor that is relatable and nasty in the best of ways. 10/10, no notes.
