A great informational podcast but they only focus on scientific advances that took place in Europe. Quite whitewashed. Africa, South America, Asia, Russia are NEVER mentioned.

Love Melvyn. We need more like him, can’t think of anyone younger who could replace him. He must do so much research for each of the wide ranging topics as he always asks relevant and focused questions, keeping the conversation interesting. He’s a less well known but nevertheless absolute...Read full review »

Melvyn Bragg uses unacceptable behavior with women: rude, domineering, interrupting, and foolish, useful questions. Please seek another host.

The range of fascinating topics curated by the excellent Melvin Bragg and the very-well chosen guests is a treat.

Brilliant show. Melvyn Bragg had this amazing knack of making the contributors get to the point of the argument in question by asking timely and pertinent questions. He also insists on a language that is clear and accessible to the audience, most of whom are not experts in the field. His...Read full review »

The contents of the show are great and informative. However, the host constantly interrupts the guests in a rather rude manner. Hey oh.

Virtually non-agenda driven scientific information. Fantastic! I maintain local copies of the entire catalogue and listen frequently. (Melvin might talk less and listen more and stop with the western religion thing.)

dear Sir If Laura Laverne would ask me what to take with me to a “ Desert Island “ ( which she never will of course ) it would be the entire “ In Our Time “ library. Also here near Brughes in Flanders, we can’t wait to hear the next episode… Sincerely Johan Van Roosmaelen Manor...Read full review »

Are you a child of the 60s, eager to hear a Brit have a go at straight-faced untiring mimicry of Jim Backus's Locust Valley lockjaw? Perhaps you're a millennial, most comfortable with podcast guests whose erudition and generational solidarity are best evinced by nearly every response...Read full review »

Absolutely love the content. What is less enjoyable is the fact that Melvyn interrupts his guests in quite an irritating way and constantly talks over or cuts across the female academics.

Except for the colonial British nationalism of the host, this podcast is excellent!

Thank you BBC for making this accessible to those of us outside of the UK.

If an alien came down from outer-space and asked me what’s so good about the BBC, I’d sit them down and play them this.

These podcasts are perhaps the best I’ve heard at going deep into detail about a scientific topic and breaking down complex science into understandable concepts for the layperson. And this is all due to the host, who asks probing questions, challenges guests’ statements, and corrals wayward...Read full review »

Great content and wonderful guests, shame about Melvin’s patronising interruptions.

On the whole I really enjoy the podcast and look forward to new episodes. The guests always have very interesting things to say about their topics and I always learn something new. The only annoyance is the main presenter who often interjects with their own naive views and questions which lowers...Read full review »

This program is absolutely the best on BBC radio. Melvyn Bragg is an excellent host for an enormous variety of subjects and teams of experts. His excitement in the discussions is infectious and , while I love all of the programs, his science encounters with academic experts are the very best, in...Read full review »

This host is rude and condescending to his guests.

I really enjoy listening to the contributors in their various fields of endeavour. I find some of the insights extremely thought-provoking and at the age of 81, you need such spurs in the flanks to make one think about the fundamentals. My sole criticism of these programs is the interventions...Read full review »

Love all of Melvyn’s podcasts, except for the ‘chaos theory’ podcast. Although aptly named, I learnt and understood nothing, in fact I’m even more puzzled.

...the host not so much. He abruptly interrupts the expert guests mid-sentence. It’s too bad because when he’s not being rude it’s a fascinating podcast.

In Our Time: exceptional. Melvyn Bragg: irreplaceable. This long-running series would, on its own, justify the entire BBC licence fee. You’d be hard pushed to find content liked this anywhere in the world. It has broadened my knowledge and enriched my life enormously.

I appreciate how she mentions that reconciliation can’t be opposed (from the colonizer) because then it’s like starting a fire, burning property, raping women and children, committing genocide, and then putting out the fire and call yourself the hero ! It’s whack !!

This truly is a national treasure and Melvyn Bragg is the irreplaceable jewell in the crown. Melvin Bragg is a host from a different era: knighted for his public radio work, a writer himself, he prepares extensively for each program and holds the guests to a much higher standard than do hosts in almost all other podcasts around these days. Yes he is direct and sometimes rude, probably...Read full review »

Great choice of topics in that there’s something for everyone. Melvyn is good at drawing out the academics but I wish he didn’t keep interrupting them to show off his tiny bit of knowledge. Fortunately the repeats have these edited out.

I’ve enjoyed nearly all that I’ve listened to and the ones I didn’t enjoy so much, half of those were a bit beyond me though some of them, I thought, well, the scientists don’t know much, I don’t know why they bothered doing the show (eg Bird Migration).
