Bad faith attempt at rationalizing self-victimization
After listening through the second bonus episode, it’s clear that Kates decided before creating this podcast that she sympathizes with the incel community and is trying to reverse engineer her own radicalization to justify her support of this movement to herself. Kates claims to take a therapeutic approach but rarely interacts with the incels she interviews outside of a few agreeing chuckles. She does not challenge her guests on any of their remarks, not even non-ideological ones like Sergeant Incel’s claim that incels.co does not allow violent language or “low-effort posting.” (The front page was full of threads with one-word or meme responses from users with flair calling for “Femoids in cages.”) Kates’ is unable to accept criticism of her work. (Most podcasts don’t have two listener mail episodes before episode 13 that call out negative reviewers.) She mimics the tone of her subjects by rejecting virtually all arguments counter to her own ideas which makes this project seem like it’s entirely in bad faith. While there is certainly a need for examining the way society fails men’s development, Kates chooses to validate this phenomenon through the lens of self-victimizing men who still often wield the social capital to exert oppression over marginalized groups through their own privilege. For example, she does not show any concern about the sexual and emotional exploitation of women who are the targets of “SEAmaxxing,” but instead focuses on how these men fulfill desires for attention from women they believe to be an inalienable right .

Naama Kates’ deep-dive investigation into the world and mind of the Incel reveals that it’s much more complex than that. Through a combination of incisive reporting,...Read full review »

I applaud the host for taking on this difficult topic. I think many of the criticisms are generally biases toward the INCEL community rather than a criticism of the podcast itself. Yes, audio could be better, but episode one of most podcasts that are not professionally produced have audio issues...Read full review »

This podcast is extremely interesting and informative. It’s understandably easy to dismiss all incels as being misogynist/Elliot Rodger types waiting to take revenge for their shortcomings on the rest of society. There’s no denying that a huge amount of misogyny exists in these online forums and...Read full review »
