Great Guest, Poor Interviewer
I want to love this podcast. J. Brown manages to get such amazing guests! People with great stories to tell and informed, interesting perspectives. The problem is that J is such an aggressively bad interviewer that his guests' stories often get stepped on and lost in the mix. J talks more than he listens and feels the need to insert his own experience after almost every comment his guests make. If he wants to tell his own story, he should do so outside of his interviews, as it just comes across and rude and self-centered. He also interrupts and puts words in his guests' mouths. Here's an example from the Matthew Remski episode: Remski: At that time, I started having seizures. Brown: So, like, you started having full-blown panic attacks? Remski: … No… I was having grand mal seizures. For J not to know the difference between a seizure and a panic attack is a embarrassing and shows how little he actually listens to his guests. There are also the excruciatingly long and repetitive rants at the beginning of each episode. I usually just skip the first 10 minutes to get to the actual interview. All of that said, this podcast manages to still be enjoyable based on the high quality of guests. If J takes the time to learn interview skills, it could be one of the best ones out there.Read full review »

I love listening to Yoga Talks and I have been inspired to commence my yoga teacher training. He has some great guests and there are some excellent discussions around the realities faced by those whose yoga is also their main source of income. As a nurse and midwife I have enjoyed the interviews...Read full review »

Ehh
This could be really really good. But J still needs to talk less and listen more. One must like to hear themselves talk to host a podcast, but this is cringe worthy. Also, try to keep more of an open mind. Learn something from those that you interview that may not serve your preexisting views....Read full review »
