missed opportunity
Every week that I listen, I swear it will be the last. If I didn't have such a long commute, it would be. Whereas the cultural gabfest errs on the side of inflating trivial issues, the annoying in-jokes, attempts at snark, and intrusive asides detract from the political gabfest's attempt to cover serious topics. My guess is that they are consciously trying to make the discussion more entertaining, but they are failing miserably. I admire Dickerson as a journalist, but Bazelon and Plotz completely undermine him. I wish I could admire Bazelon, but her chirpy, little girl voice counteracts the few strong pro-woman or scholarly legal arguments she tries to make. Plotz is completely useless and is much more likely to make an unfunny attempt at a joke or ribbing than to present a well-reasoned argument. All of the speakers fail to understand the concept of "cocktail party chatter." Really? I'm supposed want to discuss some esoteric author that Bazelon heard or Plotz's revelation that young people go to Starbucks? Ugh. What bothers me the most is that I can see how the political gabfest could be really great. All they would have to do is replace Plotz, and even Bazelon, with people who are NOT pretentious northeastern snobs. Having voices to represent other regions / parties / ethnicities would help prevent both the wrong-headed mischaracterizations of the non-D.C. world and the obnoxious in-group banter.Read full review »

They continually get sidetracked with irrelevant snide, personal remarks to one another. There are continuous interruptions which disrupt the flow of the topic under...Read full review »

This is a really charming podcast. Slate was founded by liberal columnist Michael Kinsley and was, I think, the first online opinion journal. The political gabfest reflects its excellence. John, David, and Emily are certainly liberals, but not of the knee-jerk variety. The gabfest is thoughtful...Read full review »

I am a political junkie. The one podcast I heard seemed to be a very surface level analysis and not too informed. The analyst give their opinions but don't really reason things out.Read full review »
