Radical candor
Inspiring and thought provoking. As an area head in academia I am challenged by the process of supervising people. It wasn't what I was originally hired to do (I teach) but rather was tapped to accomplish because of the structure of the department. In essence, I am an "administrator" for all the needs of the area within the department but am also expected to critique the work of my colleagues, create and present ideas to improve curriculum and course trajectory and the profile of the area. However I have absolutely no power to hire or fire. My team is comprised of professors with tenure (I have tenure) who I "inherited." I don't have the ability to compose the perfect team. The ideas I present to my area or department- I have no real power to implement. The structure is basically an exercise in the good or ill will of my colleagues, there is no way to enforce the completion or quality of delegated tasks. If a colleague forgets to do their work or is too slow or shoddy, I have no way to exact consequences beyond a conversation. All of which begins to feel incredibly burdensome to me. In addition this duty is in many ways a "service" to my department and University as my salary in no way reflects the additional duties, I am given a slight course load reduction as compensation. I'm looking for methods to be proud of my work and move forward in a manner that I feel reflects my values and ethics and will help prevent complete cynicism or bitterness on my part. This show is informative and inspiring and I feel as if I'm in on a conversation to which I was never privy in studies for my own discipline. Thanks!Read full review »

I look forward to new episodes every week. This podcast provides practical, actionable managerial tips, which is a nice contrast to typical do-good advice I get elsewhere.

I used to be a pretty crummy manager but over the years I've become a pretty good leader. However, there is still plenty room for improvement and this podcast is helping. My favorite takeaway so far is that the purpose of praise is to show people what success looks like and what you value,...Read full review »
