“Today I listened to the first episode with Dr. Alison. It was really interesting to hear a professional discuss a lot of the little things that I’ve been doing to better my sleep as tips and keys to helping with sleep health. As a college student, my schedule is something that is very different everyday and has a lot of room for sudden changes. Towards the beginning of my junior year I realized that my sleep and school schedule were very much tied to one another and that something needed to change in order to improve my sleep. One thing that I really implemented was creating a rather consistent basic schedule of my week. For the most part I have a general idea of what I will be doing every day, like when I need to wake up, when I need to be in class, what time to do homework, and other aspects of my life. It was reassuring to hear from Dr. Alison that maintaining a regular schedule can really help with sleep, as I have first hand experience of how much even a basic regular schedule can really improve sleep. Another thing that I really found interesting that she talked about was dimming the lights before heading to bed. As I adjusted to a basic regular schedule of my daily activities about a year or so ago, I also began to sleep in complete darkness. I know Dr. Alison said that getting off electronics really helps with this process of getting ready for sleep, but I like to have a video playing in the background while I fall asleep, so creating complete darkness was hard as the light from my tablet was keeping me awake. I decided to combat this by using an eye mask and dimming the light on the tablet all the way down, which really helped. Although my adjustments are perfectly in line with the tips and tricks Dr. Alison suggested, I feel reassured that they are on the right path towards fixing my busy college lifestyle and sleep health. I really think sleep is super important to our overall health, so it’s really cool to listen to professionals discussing why it’s important and giving some guidance on how to improve sleep health.”
