“Dear Valerie and Allison.
After (too) many years of getting 20,000 or so words into a manuscript, my ideas would stop, my momentum atrophy, and I would reach an end deader than there's ever been, leaving me with a pile of abandoned stories in a Dropbox folder named, 'The Unfulfilled.' But after revisiting your podcast from the very first episode right up to the present, I finally got the message, Allison's voice like a helpful little flea in my ear: Keep. Writing. I told myself to stop giving up when it gets hard; push through - even if most of what I get down might be jettisoned further down the track. Just keep going. Write the damn book. So I did, every night, after the day was done, from 10pm till 1am. I just kept writing. And guess what? Hoo boy, it worked! I've not only pushed well past that 20,000 word barrier but, one morning while making school lunches, an outline to my novel just presented itself to me like Daniel Craig knocking on my door - so perfect, so right, just in time and all mine! I've not got a single doubt now that this manuscript will be completed! I've also finally heard the message that writing isn't something 'other people' do, so I'm currently enrolled in the Advanced Fiction Writing course at the Aust. Writers Centre, I've done Natasha Lester's Two Hours to Scrivener Power which is possibly the best four hours I've ever invested in (because I've gone through it twice; this app so perfectly suits my writing style and practice) and I've submitted a poem to a poetry competition - my first ever submission! Val and Al, thank you for your podcast, and thank you for coming into my life. Because of you I feel like my own story is finally about to begin.

“This is full of beaut advice on writing and the business of being a writer, but it is really hard to hear said advice at times because for some reason they have sped up the audio until they sound like cartoon chipmunks on cocaine. The two hosts are usually intelligible (though exhausting) to...”Read full review »
