“I was just diagnosed with inattentive ADHD this past fall at age 35, and my 8 year old son was diagnosed with hyperactive/inattentive ADHD last month, so I have been doing alllll the research (obviously! 😜), hired a coach, etc. In all of that, I found your podcast & subscribed, and was able to listen to my first episode while on a long drive this morning. As I listened to Dr. Kalaki describe her life and her struggles with undiagnosed, then diagnosed ADHD, while still affirming herself and her talents & strengths, I found myself flush with simultaneous grief for years of feeling like a failure & struggling to do what felt like the most menial of tasks, and sheer joy & relief at recognizing myself in someone else's life & struggle. I immediately listened to the episode before that, about not being able to "fix" ADHD, and began to just sob (unfortunately, it was also pouring rain outside- so it was raining from the sky AND from my eyes, which I wouldn't recommend while driving, but I made it to my destination safely!). Every word that Nikki and Pete spoke dove straight into my hungry heart & nestled there, affirming that I am not alone, that I am not broken, that my struggles will not be fixed by the mandate of "just be more organized", that I am not a crappy parent, that I am not lazy. I am beginning to feel like I have so much more agency in my life simply by learning more about how this neuro-diverse brain of mine works, and I'm starting to feel more & more equipped to help, encourage & support my son with his own ADHD.
