Thursday May 4, 2017 I participated in a storytelling event at HousingWorks Bookstore in Manhattan. The title was "Teach Me You Did" and was a celebration of Star Wars Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, and the resistance. I shared the story of a family friend, James West, who taught me much.

Happy throwback Thursday all. In this post I read an article I wrote in Horizon, the school newspaper of the Sidwell Friends upper school. The article is from September 8, 1993. For more audio recordings of people reading articles out loud, visit http://baratun.de

I'm now one of three co-hosts on TakePart Live (http://takepart.com/live) on the new TV network, Pivot. Every day, Jacob Soboroff, Meghan McCain and I deliver and debate news, and because it's TV, we run out of time! So consider this my extended thoughts or "Things I Would Have Said On TV If We Had More Time." I'm testing out this format on my SoundCloud account and welcome feedback to [email protected]

Fruitvale Station is the fictional account of an all too true story of the murder of Oscar Grant by Bay Area Rapid Transit police. I recorded this episode of the podcast moments after seeing an advanced screening of the film on Wednesday July 10th with my friend and former college roommate Dahni-El Giles. The movie is beautiful and hard to watch at the same time. You absolutely must see it. More info here http://www.fruitvalefilm.com/ In our conversation, Dahni-El and I reference the work...

This is the sound of a man returned from the conference circuit of TED, SXSW and F.ounders. In this confessional, I recap some of the happenings at SXSW and talk a bit about the controversy surrounding The Onion's Oscar night tweeting. Also I'm on my way to brunch, so this cuts off abruptly.

Thursday 6 December 2012, I spoke in Tulsa, Oklahoma about How To Be Black. I was invited by Booksmart and hosted by the Philbrook Museum and the John Hope Franklin Center. This is the audio of the Q&A portion of the show and is missing the very first question because I forgot to press record.

Last night (ok a few hours ago) I gave the keynote address for Colby College's Center for Arts and Humanities program which is focusing on humor all year. After a one hour address/comedy show/multimedia presentation, I did about 30 minutes worth of Q&A. Topics covered included "When does comedy go too far in offending?" "How did you get started in comedy?" "Can you use humor around natural disasters?" "Can social media be used for good?" and "What are your thoughts about the presidential...

From 4pm Monday 29 October until roughly 10pm Tuesday 30 October, I captured my journey walking out of Manhattan as Hurricane Sandy hit and then back in the next day after it had past. This podcast features solo commentary stitched together over time as well as interviews with friends and strangers I met along the way. Most of this recording features time spent at Bad Burger in the East Village. I'd like to especially thank the owners there for opening their business, their kitchen, and...

I have been counting the number of black people I see at the Republican National Convention. Today I came across Paris Dennard, former director of African-American outreach for President George W. Bush. He seemed genuinely amused by #negrospotting, so we talked. I wanted to find someone with whom to discuss the GOP's challenge in recruiting black members when considered in the context of birtherism, voter ID/suppression and other we-don't-really-want-you signals sent by the party. I would...

On 4 July 2011, as I was nearing completion of "How To Be Black" I took a break to read and then perform this incredible 1852 speech by Frederick Douglass titled "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" At 10,000 words and full of insight, wit and rage it is worth all 80 of the minutes it takes to listen. I performed this at The Onion's NYC offices in front of a live studio audience and live web stream audience. Enjoy. Full text here:...
