Lacklustre discussion on abortion rights in Abortion in America ep. Emily says the “question of abortion rights is pretty much established” here and is “settled” in the U.K. Could this be more England-centred if it tried? Norther Irish people must travel to England for an abortion - debate is hardly settled. She qualifies this with “it’s illegal in NI but our closest neighbour, Ireland, Dublin, overturned their antiabortion laws”. Given the BBC’s inability to cover trans people in an unbiased or inclusive way, it’s inconceivable the presenters would be unaware that abortion access does not just affect cis women. Yet they seem somewhat insistent on characterising it as solely women’s access, women’s reactions and how women will vote. Heck, even the ep description describes “women's rights to abortions”. I find it hard to believe it wasn’t a conscious choice and it’s very disappointing. Lewis quite plainly describing himself as antimonarchy in all but name because “monarchy works”. Makes for unsatisfactory listening at best and annoyance at a lack of critical thinking or acknowledgement of why monarchy seemingly works for him as a prominent white male journalist. Or perhaps, as we’ve seen during the period of national mourning, calling yourself antimonarchy leaves you open to endless harassment and Lewis said ‘no thanks’ to that. Peter Mandelson interview is a joke.Read full review »

The News Agents (cringe) arrives on the political podcast scene very much in the shadow of the excellent The Rest Is Politics. The News Agents’ (still cringing) cloyingly smug presenting team talk at, rather than to, the listener. As a listening experience it is akin to a room full of...Read full review »
