Dave and Mark are highly erudite commentators on all things rock, pop and film. Whilst delivering praise where it’s due, they eloquently call out some of the ridiculousness of the whole popular culture scene and its prima donna artistes. Personally, I think they could ditch some of the segments...Read full review »

This is by far the best pod on the interesting but ludicrous world of popular music. I get jolly fretful if it’s posted late and make sure I’m good and settled before I listen.

Hosted by David Hepworth & Mark Ellen, music's very own Stephen Fry and Wikipedia, Word explores music history, vinyl collections and the work of various contributors. Word educates whilst being brilliantly funny. You will laugh, discover, rediscover and learn. Artists and albums are...Read full review »

Like a particularly good afternoon down the pub with two old mates (two knowledgeable, opinionated and funny old mates). Life-affirming and delightful -- and they probably always get their rounds in.

… as the gents are fond of saying on their terrific podcast. David and Mark’s deep passion and enthusiasm after many decades in music journalism remains undiminished and i look forward to each episode.

Brilliantly enjoyable 50 minutes every week. The move to weekly helped me through lockdowns . I’m still enjoying this tremendously. Why do I remember all these releases from 40 /50 years ago ?

If you like music this is full of information & opinions about music mostly from 60s-90s from two journalist/author/broadcasters. A brilliant show, enjoy every episode. Thanks for taking the effort to record these discussions

Perhaps the most wonderful aspect of the Word is that David Hepworth and Mark Ellen’s passion for rock music remains completely undiminished despite having covered it for well over 50 years. The knowledge is encyclopedic but it’s their humour, humility and sheer genuineness that shine through on...Read full review »

Begun in the golden days of Word Magazine, evolving through Word In Your Ear nights in Islington, and now, courtesy of lockdowns, back to its roots of two cocoa tins and a bit of string, Mark Ellen and David Hepworth are the rock raconteurs par excellence. I was there for the first one and I...Read full review »

A wonderfully rambling ongoing conversation about the highways and byways of pop music from the ages between old friends, Mark, David & young whippersnapper Magic Alex who simply can’t be boring. This is one of the first podcasts I look for each week. Splendid!

Long term listener of these two fine gentleman and their entertaining music chat. Their regularity during lockdown has been especially welcome!

Good grief! Listening to Mark and David just reminds me of my late dad and his mates endlessly yawping on about bloody Bob Dylan and Fairport Convention. Their awareness of any artists post Live Aid is virtually zero……..and I absolutely LOVE THIS PODCAST!

…it has a laugh at an industry that often takes itself far too seriously. Plus there are sometimes fascinating interviews with music biz people and book recommendations. It’s all here!

I’ve been listening to the Word in Your Ear podcast since it was the Word podcast and I was a subscriber to the magazine. I really enjoy Mark and David’s take on music and culture and I know you will. They really know what they’re talking about and they do it in a funny and insightful way. I...Read full review »

I’ve been listening to this podcast for what must be around 10 years now and it never lets me down. If like me you still mourn the passing of Word magazine this will be a pretty good substitute. David and Mark always have something worthwhile to say about the rock universe and beyond....Read full review »

I’ve known David and Mark for something like 35 years, yet never tire of their own version of what I believe young people today call “bants”. Endlessly entertaining, always fresh. And free. What more could you ask?

I’ve been listening to this podcast for several years now as well as being a big fan of Mr Hepworth’s books. Informative, funny and thought provoking on all music matters. Dave, Mark and Alex are all warm, genial, amusing and thoroughly entertaining hosts. Dream pub companions? Very...Read full review »
