This show is a great break in the age we live in about everyone being an expert on world events. These people create an entertaining break. Many people consider themselves well versed in English, and yet the way these people approach these topics with humour is easy to listen to.

This was the perfect podcast. An engaging exploration of English words with enough academic rigor to satisfy pedants while remaining utterly non-proscriptive or judgmental. As the hosts often disclaim, lexicography is about usage not correctness. I love the thoughtful escape they provided for 20...Read full review »

Funny, intelligent, insightful. I loved this show and am crushed that it is no longer being produced🙁 I would resisten to shows 2 or 3 times just to fully grasp when these brainiacs have to say. I guess I’ll just start at episode one all over again😘

When I first heard this podcast I was surprised by how much I liked it, and how much it changed my mind about the English language. It illuminated so much about the language that native speakers just take for granted, or just never recognized in the language. The way the hosts approach language...Read full review »

When plans for the short summer break were shared in the last episode, I felt a bit sad but was heartened to know my favorite podcast would be back soon. That was months ago. Is there any plan to revive it now?

Hi, I listened to episode 100, it was interesting to learn that Ammon Shea had read the OED and written a book about it. Later the same day I picked up the book I had been reading; The Word Detective (John Simpson), and there on page 264, he cited Ammon Shea’s reading of the OED. Coincidence, I...Read full review »

Hey, lexophiles!! (Yes, I made it up, but you figured it out, right?) Surely this topic is inexhaustible. Please give us more fascinating episodes. You and John McWhorter are all I need.

A very good podcast. Apparently 100 episodes were enough, though. I hope it comes back someday.

Every episode is fascinating and full of great information. If you love language and are curious about the ways in which it evolves, give Word Matters a try. If you love to tell people they’re wrong, Word Matters will teach you acceptance.

Just listened to your “Frenchify your French” episode and as a French teacher and quasi-native speaker, I found it extremely well done. I’ve shared it with a number of friends and colleagues. Thank you!!!

Love the awareness that can only arrive by mutual understanding and agreement for definitions within language. Which is why “Words Matter”. The Hostess’ with the Mostest of congeniality staged yet impromptu in feeling engaging dialogue. Being slightly dyslexic and seeing words phonically, the...Read full review »

I like all your shows, but the episode “Uncommon Opposites” was a hoot. The quote that used “shevelled” and other unlikely terms was absolutely beautiful. Clever use (and misuse) of language is my favorite form of humor. I use puns often, and sometimes they leave my listeners confused because...Read full review »

If you love words and the history of language, you will love this show. It has interesting facts, witty hosts, and possibly the most calming theme music ever created.

I thoroughly enjoy the content created here and appreciate the grammar discussions, but there is an audio issue. One of the male speakers dips low and high, low and high, almost fading in and out of earshot. It’s actually quite difficult to listen to. It’s one of those things where you have to be...Read full review »

I really enjoy this podcast. My only problem is Ammon Shea’s mumbling. His comments, when I can hear them, are always insightful and frequently witty, which is why I would like to hear more of them. Speak up Ammon! And enunciate, is please!

I'm enjoying this podcast, perhaps even more as an elderly British listener who finds homself raising an eyebrow at some of the 'Americanisms'. For example, this podcast is the first time I've heard 'skimmed milk' referred to as 'skim milk'. On the other hand a lot...Read full review »

Great podcast where you are sure to learn something new or an interesting fact. Word nerds will love it but any English speaker will enjoy the informative but not jargon heavy podcast! I highly recommend it!

I always learn something new about something I thought I already knew. If you love words for their own sake, and enjoy the way we use them, this just might be your new favorite podcast.

This show is really tremendous! I’m a 19 year old guy and I don’t even consider myself particularly interested by lexicography or grammar as a subject, and yet this show checks a lot of boxes for me. It’s incredibly educational, it has its fair share of humor and levity, the conversations feel...Read full review »

The presentation of the content is great. Emily, Neil, Ammon, and Peter have very engaging voices and the conversation is always inviting and enjoyable. Never preachy, pedantic, or palling. And Emily was a great laugh. Bravo.

I keep wishing I could be sitting in the room with all the hosts and joining in the discussion. From the time I was little, I have always loved learning and spelling new words. I finally downloaded Word Matters after listening to a podcast where “like” was used at least 20 times a minute. It is an antidote to the enormous mass of Wiki-led info podcasts that...Read full review »

I am very grateful to have found you. There are so many words people use, even in news casts, that seem wrong to me: Such as “you and myself” saw the cat. Should it not be, “you and I” saw the cat. I have mixed feelings about this podcast. I listen to it, and I always learn something. I like each of the four hosts, but sometimes I'm annoyed at the structure of the podcast.
