This is boring nonsense. Not in the “gradually building suspense” way. In the “I loathe every word out of the characters’ mouths because it is more boring nonsense” way.

The first half of the opening chapter showed a lot of promise, and there is an attempt at a slow burn style horror story, just not the best example of that narrative style I’ve come across. The voice acting was great, which is what you hope for with a stacked cast but don’t always get - screen...Read full review »

The story is interesting and allows the listener to be in the moment of the story. Listened to this 3 times. Can’t stand it when people use these opportunities to voice their own stupid issues. This is a well narrated story by a well known actor worthy of your time. This rating shouldn’t be used...Read full review »

I luved this!!! Such a great series. Great all star cast, twisted storyline and old-school creepshow theme music

Meh
Someone said this sounds like the late Bill Paxton? I think you meant Will Patton, who is alive & well, thank God, & did indeed narrate this. As much as I will listen to him narrate almost anything, I had to hit pause on this podcast. I’m trying to figure out where the scare factor is,...Read full review »

The title pretty much says it all. Second episode in and nothing has happened. But we are treated to and extended scene of two people eating and drinking loudly. I’m sure that’s cool for some folks, but I’m out.

The one star reviews are clearly unfamiliar with Zahler. Yes, it’s uneven and goofy in places but it’s stylistically consistent with his body of work. If you’re not into it, you’re not into it but I certainly am. It’s like Zahler wrote his own entry into the Lovecraft mythos and it’s beautiful....Read full review »

This story had promise, but the poor voice acting, jumpy plot and numerous, awkward descriptions of sexual encounters really sank it. The writing is sophomoric at best, and laughable at many junctures. Really not that good.

You have to listen with good headphones or it doesn’t do it enough justice. This is just like a movie and this guy sounds just like the late and great Bill Paxton. Great job! So well done!!!

Eh
So, I loved this at first. But o had to throw in the towel at the beginning of episode 3. The author chose to give each character a “nickname”. I can only hear “Lanky Fellow, Pale Girl, or Slender Boy” 2000 times before I want to rip my hair out. Many of those scenes consist of 2 people, so a...Read full review »

There are many podcasts out there where people read scary stories, or even where people act out short stories. But until now, there’s been nothing that combines high quality writing with serious acting, at a lengthy and pace something like that of a tv miniseries. Other “scary story” or horror...Read full review »

They have top billed actors, but the story and dialogue is so forced. The two characters that are supposed to anchor the story are the faux hipster intellectual pseudo speak that you get irritated, but they belong to one another. Literally the main character’s friends spends the first episode...Read full review »

The writing (both the hamfisted narration in the style of a verbose film script and the incredibly stilted failing-to-sound-clever dialogue) is godawful; the story ends up veering into some truly staggering racism (it makes Temple of Doom seem like a thoughtful and respectful ethnographic survey...Read full review »

This series started off good, but then they added random sexual scenes with ridiculous sound effects... I think majority of us came here to hear A well written horror story, not weird sexual sounds. We all get it, normal people have sex but we don’t have to hear 2 to 3 minutes of ridiculous sound...Read full review »

Good story but the narrating is extra. Less narrating more acting. I dnt need to kno how long someone’s finger nails are.
Tonidin via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 09/06/19
The two main characters are extremely obnoxious (they both speak like they’re reading out of a thesaurus, I guess to make them seem “smart”? It’s bad) but the actual story itself is good and creepy.

Fangoria should be embarrassed to have their name on this. This reads like a child writing with a thesaurus. Every descriptor chosen is awkward and there is a constant over use of specific details that distract from the story telling. For some bizarre reason we are constantly told the exact...Read full review »

Repetitive descriptions, meandering plot. One would expect better from Fangoria. Comes across more like Fanfic-ia.

Sounded like I was being read a bed time story from Donald Trump. Probably a good story, but the Trump impersonation voice was too off putting.

this is billed at the first of its kind, ear movie. what a load of nonsense. its not even an audio drama. its an enhanced audio book at best. There are some scenes which don’t have relevance to the overall plot and some unanswered questions but still fantastic. I have given this a 5/5. There is one user who rated it 1/5 and claimed the dialogue is pretentious. I disagree.

This show has really lame writing and I couldn’t continue listening when it turned into a cliché young people drama from the point of view of a nerdy boy
dualitybyslipknot via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 03/07/19
This series isn’t without its charms. The voice acting is great. The sound design is top notch. It starts out promising enough, but goes downhill in the third act. Major plot elements don’t get the attention (or exposition) they deserve, and too many things get glossed over. It’s like the writer...Read full review »

The only reason I got through the entire show was the promise that it would get better. It did not. If you want to hear Will Patton say “lanky fellow” about 200 times this is the podcast for you. Really want to like this but so far it’s terrible. All of the characters think they’re brilliant, unique geniuses and the dialogue is unrealistic - no one talks this pretentiously all the time.
Sam&Pepper via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 02/03/19
Not sure why so many 5 star reviews. Production is good. Story is Not that good. The first 4 or 5 episodes are kind of pointless and there are only 8 episodes. It’s only in the last two episodes that the plot comes out. Wouldn’t recommend.

TBH it took me a few episodes to get used to the narrator’s repetition of “the lanky man” & “the pale woman” — but after awhile I fell into the groove and just let Will Patton’s voice and the killer narrative work its magic. Will Patton and Vincent D’Onoforio, what more can be said! They really elevate the calibre of the story telling. The story is good, lots of mystery and spookiness.

I loved this. Listening to it at night with my eyes closed, I could see the movie playing out and was genuinely scared! It always remains a couple steps ahead of its audience. A lot to admire here: from the sound design, to the writing, and voice talents. More please!
