One of the biggest issues I see is that most people are not consuming adequate amounts of protein when in a caloric deficit. When you're in a caloric deficit, what is actually happening is you're allowing your body to facilitate fat loss because you are consuming less than the calories you need to function relative to your maintenance calories. This enables your body to draw energy from a stored energy source.

1. Hemoglobin A1c test The best way to determine whether or not someone has insulin resistance conclusively is to get your hemoglobin A1c tested. Just keep in mind, that when you get your A1c levels tested, it's an average of what's going on in your blood in the last thirty days. If your A1c levels are under 5.7, you are fine. Between 5.7 and I'd say about 6.4 is pre-diabetic. I'd say over 6.4 is diabetic.
