That’s great for students and especially those who study philosophy but are in lack of political approach! Thanks

This podcast sucked me and my neighbour into an ongoing broader enquiry into philosophy, sociology, psychology & literature - thank you

Philosophy is an old useless system of thought which has been irrelevant to society for a century. There Akers of this podcast have no real insight into the fact they are just a living museum

Extraordinarily thoughtful and well-written commentary. As free from bias as you can get on these topics.

David Runciman's rigorous yet easygoing talks about key figures in the history of political philosophy represent the holy grail of intellectual entertainment. Beautifully presented, without the stiffness of a formal lecture, entirely accessible to a general audience, and packed to the rafters...Read full review »

What a beautiful summary of Catherine Mackinnon’s plight, I just listened to. My deepest thanks to the creators of this program for the refreshing cold water that just quenched my ears and mind which have been smoking for so long. A true gift of happiness, this is.

Each episode reveals information that stimulates. Thoughtful and considered approach- well worth listening to each episode twice. Started listening to the second series - absolutely outstanding- well done!! I have now started the series again in Aug 2021 and still finding it really good- best...Read full review »

A real delight - insight, opinion and balance combined. How relevant these thinkers seem to so many aspects of life today is astonishing - and inspiring!

I wish Runciman could inject a bit more enthusiasm. He seems mildly depressed throughout. And how about an overview at the start, and a summary and conclusions at the end of each episode? Or is this how Oxbridge professors lecture today: stream of consciousness?

Excellent series. Have just completed the first season, and pre-ordering the book came as the next obvious step. Because I do want to know more about most of the authors dealt with, I do want feed a growing hunger for the history of ideas, and I do want to try my best to use these ideas to...Read full review »

This is an excellent series - stimulating and thought provoking - complex ideas distilled in a clear, concise and at times quite whimsical manner - David also has the most listenable voice in the podcast universe

I loved both series and felt like it has given me an understanding of some of the building blocks on which our culture is built. It’s remarkable how often you come across the political philosophers discussed in day to day life. Rousseau, Schumpeter, Bentham, Arendt, Hayek, Fanon Luxemburg etc...Read full review »

This season and the last give a great summary to some of the key thinkers from the last 400 years. They changed the world, the made us think differently.

Thank you for these two great series. I have learned so much. More about people I knew something about. Lots about folk I’d never heard of. I have shared some with others. THANK YOU.

For an intelligent man he seems to have very little doubt about an overarching narrative of oppressed and oppressor. It’s a clear univariate story told as if he’s so familiar with it - it’s kind of dull to repeat it to us. I totally disagree with his easy summation of relations between men and...Read full review »

David Runciman takes complex and contested tracts of thought, and delivers a startlingly clear view into them. Indeed, David is unparalelled as a guide to ideas and practices that deeply affect our lives. The delivery of the material is always well-paced, and David’s style is engaging in a...Read full review »

I love listening to David talking about major intellectual figures in history of ideas
Artreport via Apple Podcasts · Russia · 03/26/21
Runciman not only describes his great liberal and reactionary subjects in concise, beautiful prose; he puts them into conversation with each other, layering each new episode over the prior entries, and for this reason the listener feels not lost in a maze of perspectives but lifted up to the...Read full review »

A thoughtful and well-produced podcast, but the ideological bent is blatant and the ‘history’ it presents is undeniably selective. After a few episodes I - an academic and a Dane in the UK - was bothered by how politically skewed it all is.

There were many times when I didn’t pay attention in class. I wish David Runcimam had been my teacher. I love this podcast.

I want to quit work and work out my mind with this for years. Every episode opens up so many lines of inquiry and thought.

Runciman’s clarity, his calm delivery, and his insightful comments make even the most challenging ideas accessible. He brings political philosophy to life. This might be a history of ideas, but it feels vital, pressing and current. I am absolutely in love with this podcast!

So happy for season two, and I still regularly listen to all of the season one episodes. With each re-listen I always get some new insight.

A very well informed and interesting podcast but frequently loses me with the narrators monotone narration.

I’ve been listening to this podcast since last year and has become one of my favourites! The narration is excellent, the insight on each thinker is fascinating and so well argued. Podcasts really don’t get much better than this one. Runciman is an academic but he manages to come across as just a really engaged and curious intellect, which is what typically moves the “academic” into the ”teacher” column for me.

Rather like their partner publication the LRB, this is a ‘long form’ experience. You’ll need time and attention to appreciate it, but if you give those the rewards are great.
