Some good stuff but masking an agenda
Kara seems knowledgable and intelliegent but be careful ... She makes lots of positive inclusive statements - reeling off the LGBT+ letters often along with race categories. I don't remember age coming up, it is just the trendy ones so far. Trans isn't differentiated but I get the impression that trans-female is a positive inclusion, trans-male is not. If you identify as male then you are now part of the problem - even if you spent 40 years identifying as female. Especially early on, she hammers the patriarchy as the source of all things bad, and implicitly therefore all non-female identifying people are inherently bad. What she doesn't seem to understand is that most of those who identify as male are also damaged and controlled by the patriarchy. Most heirarchies are patriarchies but that is changing. She demonstrates the darker side of all people in power. In all but gender she is behaving as one of the patriarchy she denounces. Does that make her part of a growing matriarchy? Replacing one with another doesn't benefit those oppressed by either. I find her constant reference to her "chickens" offensive and demeaning. She hasn't said she is "mother hen", but that is the implication. It comes over as controlling and putting you in your place under her. Thus she behaves just as those in the patriarchy who concentrate their power amongst the FEW men. It doens't matter if it is a male or female who demeans you, keeps you down, undermines your sense of self. This is the flaw in her approach/personality in these podcasts. She does build you up but under her not independent of her! However as I said at the beginning - she is knowledgable and intelligent - even if you don't identify as female (cis or trans) then you can get something from her words, maybe it just means that you can see how people in positions of power try to influenece and control you - just question some of her statements of fact, some of these seem to come from a postion of previous hurt (she makes reference to some of that early on) not the wisdom she clearly has in parts. Her postion and language stimulates fandom and devotion (you can see it in the reviews). It's a working model, demonstrated in the patriarchy - and she adapts it well. That is why this is just "OK". Shame, as she had an opportunity to show power doesn't need to rely on the same hacknied methods the estabilished patriarchy uses.Read full review »
